caracas street art

Government-financed brigades of graffiti artists and muralists are blanketing the walls of Caracas, Venezuela, with politicized images, ranging from crude, semi-anonymous graffiti tags to bold, colorful works.
Of all the murals that adorn the anarchic city's trash-strewn center, one creation by the street artist Carlos Zerpa fills him with special pride: a stenciled reinterpretation of Caravaggio's "David with the Head of Goliath," in which a warrior grasps the severed head of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

RETAKE PUBLIC SPACE!

THAT is what I want to do with my life. Or maybe at least for a year.
Fuck multicorporations, Big Pharma, Big Food, Oil, the government, etc..!

That's art worthy to be made and seen.

Photo-lurking on fbook, living vicariously.

I would much, much rather be the real indie/artsy type going to an art school than moderately artsy and studying economics. :\
Being first-generasian has its typisches expectations.

mike shinoda :: glorious excess (dies)

tabloid wall (above), the good life 1 (below)
at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

virtual tour, mike shinoda's blog, flickr set of the exhibition (100 photos)
Glorious Excess (Dies) got a glowing review by world-class art collector and critic, Ronnie Pirovino today. Here's what he had to say:
"LA’s Japanese American National Museum is now hosting a prodigious art exhibition by Mike Shinoda entitled Glorious Excess (Dies). The massive creative effort is a pivotal point in the career of the young artist, as he establishes himself outside of his work in music. Shinoda’s adroit use of all types of media to channel his voice is remarkable. The show signals the artist’s ability to create his vision in a plethora of mediums, including digital platforms. It’s clear that the concept of the exhibition has been thoughtfully embedded into each rendition. It’s not too early to opine that Glorious Excess (Dies) provides one the year’s most memorable moments. On view until October 4."

Maya Lin

Maya Lin's "Storm King Wavefield" on permanent installation at the Storm King Art Center in NY. She's the artist who won the commission for the Vietnam War Memorial in DC. She's also the one who made that hill out of small wooden rectangular blocks which went on exhibit at the De Young in SF a while ago. I did not get to see that exhibit, but some people who've seen it were definitely like "pshht 'art'". I wrote a paper about that wooden hill, actually. Well, just as an example. What constitutes "good" art, real vs nature, stuff like that. That was an interesting Culture, Art, & Technology class. The CAT class I'm in now is pretty boring, or at least not interesting to me. Eugenics, medical stuff, maybe some ethical issues, whee.

The New Neues Museum

In the renovation, “All usable scraps and remnants of the original, countless thousands of pieces, big and small, including even bullet holes (if they weren’t too big), were to be incorporated into the building. . . Every wall, floor, lintel, column, frieze, mosaic and ceiling was treated as part of this vast jigsaw puzzle.”
