The Leaf
Auf den ersten Blick schaut es zwar eher aus, wie ein langgezogenes Festnetz-Mobilteil, aber in Wirklichkeit ist es ein Konzept für ein flexibles Handy, das sich um das Handgelenk schmiegt und von der Sonne aufgeladen wird. Und wenn um den Arm geschlungen ist, wirkt es durch eine Digitalanzeige wie eine stylische Armbanduhr.Das Design haben sich Seungkyun Woo und Junyi Heo ausgedacht. Im Standby wickelt man sich das Handy einfach ums Handgelenk, wo es sich mit Sonnenenergie auflädt. Die Idee ist ziemlich genial, denn das Handy hat man immer dabei, wenn man unterwegs ist – wieso es also nicht auch unter Sonne aufladen? Und das ewige Problem der ausgebeulten Hosentaschen erledigt sich dann auch.
"The Leaf" nennt sich das Handykonzept und orientiert sich hierbei an der Funktionsweise der Photosynthese. Auf der Oberseite sind Solarzellen zum Aufladen angebracht. Doch auch auf der Rückseite befinden sich Zellen, welche durch eine speziell angepasste Basisstation aufgeladen werden können. Somit ist auch an sonnenfreien Tagen das Aufladen an der Steckdose kein Problem.
Bleibt nur abzuwarten, wann die umweltfreundliche Idee Marktreife erhalten wird.

As a US citizen, a medical doctor currently living in Germany, a country where health care is universally available for its residents at affordable rates, I might have some perspectives on this debate you haven't yet run across.
What I find most astounding about our US health care system is not only how many people don’t have coverage (some 46 million, and going up). But rather, how fragile and precarious health care coverage is for so many people who think they are well insured.
How does our US health care system compare? Let's go through some important points in the universal health care system in Germany, which I'm very familiar with:
Here in Germany you are mandated to have standard comprehensive health insurance:
your employer pays half the monthly family premium, you pay the other half,
•you don't get rejected because of any previous condition,
•you don't pay more or less working for a large or small business,
•you don’t pay more or less if you are male or female, black or white, German or foreign born, gay or straight,
•the rates don't go up if someone in the small (or large) business gets sick,
•health insurance is not a consideration when changing jobs or careers because you take the policy with you,
•you don’t lose your policy if you get sick, if you become unemployed, or even if your employer goes out of business,
•you won’t be billed for “out of network” services in hospitals or elsewhere - these services are part of your coverage, no matter which hospital or team of doctors treats you,
•you don’t have annual, lifetime, disease-related, or disease-recurrence caps,
•you won’t be billed at 20%, 30% or more for expensive medications (“price-tiered” pharmaceuticals), because there is no "tiering", legally approved pharmaceuticals are fully covered when you need them, even if they're very expensive,
•nor will you ever go bankrupt due to unpaid and unaffordable medical bills piling up, - that simply doesn't happen – you enjoy completely comprehensive coverage.
•Also, forget expensive copays ($40/year max. for doctor visits @$10 per quarter, a few dollars per prescription, a minimal meals expense during a hospital stay.
•Forget too the denials, the constant slog of endless 0800 calls (yours and your doctor’s) to your insurance company for requests for coverage or adjustments, wasting huge amounts of people's time, energy, and productive capacity every business day - this doesn't happen in Germany, because this is a comprehensive coverage system (which is an important reason why it's so efficient).
I might add that Germany is a democratic country with a freely elected government; its residents are free people – this is not "Russia". In fact, this is the country with long stretches of Autobahn without speed limits, right? (Here, it’s your responsibility to drive safely, and most do.) People here freely change jobs, careers, and locations without any regard for health insurance, and they are free of the fear of going bankrupt or losing their homes or life’s savings if they were to get seriously ill, because their comprehensive insurance protects them from that!
Germany and its residents are not going broke paying for this, either. On the contrary, this fair, efficiently run health care system costs roughly a third less per person that the US system - that's right, about 1/3 less per capita – despite (or because?) everyone being on board and receiving comprehensive health care.
That figure doesn’t come from rationing, long waits to see a doctor, or long waiting lists to get an operation, either—that doesn’t happen here. What that figure does reflect, however, is just how much waste, duplication, and gouging of consumers must be taking place in the US health care system every day.
My point in describing the German health care system is not to encourage you all to move to Germany, but to prove to you, that for one-third less money than you currently already spend, you should be getting comprehensive, universal health care, like every resident of Germany does (yes, including all immigrants!). But you're not.
May I humbly suggest: advocate, and work with your friends and neighbors for health care reform now, absolutely including a strong public plan, which is the lynchpin for any meaningful reform.
Don't let the lobbyists, their surrogates on TV, or their gun-toting mobs and pre-organized advocates at town hall meetings, scare you, confuse you, or drown out your voices yet again.
It is time to face up to this national challenge as adults, and finally join the peoples of the 17 (seventeen!) other advanced democracies (not "Russia", but, yes indeed, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Australia, Japan, S. Korea and even Taiwan!) around the world, who already enjoy the benefits of universal, comprehensive, and affordable health care.
We absolutely can grab this bull by the horns, and get this job done this year!!!

A skydiver almost goes upside-down as he approaches Justin Herman plaza. T-Mobile celebrated the official launch of its new myTouch 3G phone with an aerial event over the San Francisco skyline. On August 5, 100 skydivers parachuted into Justin Herman Plaza as fly-by jets lit up the sky with colored smoke over the Embarcadero, Justin Herman Plaza, Marina Green Park, Pier 39 and Moscone Recreation Center.

Wurster Cottage
When Twitter co-founder Biz Stone tweets, a million people listen. So it wasn't surprising that when he recently posted a message about selling his home, the broker's Web site he linked to was so overwhelmed that it froze up.
"We loved our Wurster cottage in Berkeley but it's time to move - if you're into architecture, check it out," read the tweet.
Many people don't like these little Chronicle homes articles which because they seem like advertisements. But I enjoy them because I like looking at architecture.

Gosh, I'm getting too lazy/busy to blog.
I'm not even writing long personal entries, just short entries of things that catch my eye.
But I guess this will turn into a medium-long length entry, now that I've started it, and started it with talking about myself. + random thoughts
I WANT THE NYTIMES. DELIVERED. TO MY DOORSTEP. EVERY DAY.
if not NYtimes, SF CHRONICLE IS FINE/ALSO GOOD.
gosh, I just love reading. I don't really like reading the newspaper online. I just look over the headlines on the main page, maybe read an article or two, then open new tabs to check e-mail, facebook, dl music, etc. It sucks. I want the newpaper in hard copy. Then I could skim through every headline, big and small, maybe little articles that will be of some interest. I could cut out pictures. The NYtimes has really good photos, if you haven't noticed that many of my previous posts are photos+links to NYtimes articles. + with hard copy of newspaper, comicspage! =D wow I miss getting the newspaper. If I got the newspaper, I would be so much more aware of current events. It's just too easy to scroll through the main nytimes page then go on with the usual interweb browsing. =[ mehh
I MISS ICE CREAM. SUPREME ICE CREAM.
Socal is too dominated by fuckin fro-yo. WTF Yogurtland opened in Berkeley???! On Bancroft right across campus??! WTFFFFF. Ok, it's good because it's a lot cheaper. 30¢ an ounce, 8¢ less than here. Yes, a good thing that froyo opened there. Fine. But I am so freakin tired of froyo. I get froyo like every week. I WANT ICE CREAM. Ici, Tara's organic ice cream, and gelato. Ahhhh that's what I'm really missing from Berkeley. Haha. That and pizza. and Thai food. Zachary's Chicago style. Their thin style is also really good. Then, real Thai food. Yessss. Lols the things I miss most from home is the food. xD
Oh, and grass (I don't mean weed). Sitting in the parks. So relaxing. No one really sits on the grass at school. No parks around where I'm living right now.
Berkeley Parks ♥. and walking around houses that are all different. Instead of walking around business parks and empty parking lots and wide streets.
I was reading Mark Morford's latest column (he hit the FB limit of 5000 friends! I missed my chance.. =[ but I became a fb fan. lol I left a comment saying his columns are literary orgasms.), and in it, he subtly includes links to NSFW blogs. So really, why are guys so fucking tasteless and still look Playboy and online porn where all the girls are oiled up and photoshopped and all that? Ughh. There's indie porn (don't click), and lots more tasteful artsy porn that're so much more interesting and beautiful. And you don't even need to pay for a subscription. Seriously, guys.
Next topic: tumblr
Tumblr's are so easy to use. But tumblrs are just for reposting stuff. And that's exactly what almost every blogger does. Repost shit. Blogspots are more for blogging/writing. Tumblrs are just for pictures. Not sure where I was going to go with this paragraph, maybe no where to go, just wanted to state the difference from different blogging sites. I repost stuff, pictures and links to articles, to music downloads.
Yeah. gosh that was such a cruddy ending to this post.
I watched Citizen Kane last night. Woke up late today.
My handwriting keeps getting messier. Going to spend the rest of my day typing up my notes.

Nagakin Capsule Tower

It's a pretty interesting read. Heard of the Japanese Metabolist Movement?

But not live.
I heard mixmeister is pretty easy to use, but I couldn't download it (all of the ones I tried just showed up as text files x__x) so I got Ableton instead. which is much too complicated for me and I'm not going to produce. I only wanted to make a mix.. =| it took like 10x longer mixing on software than live spinning on cdjs/turntables. Blahh
Anyhow, I finished it. Please download+listen and tell me if you like it. =)
Feedback on track selection/flow welcomed. Not so much for mixing, since it was my first time using Ableton and I've spent enough time on it and don't wanna mess with it anymore, unless you have tips for mixing on Ableton.

Happy 4th!
Fireworks display off Staten Island NY with the Verrazano Bridge in the background which connects Staten Island to Brooklyn.
I went to the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar with a couple friends. A ton of fried high-risk-for-heart disease All-American food there. Some really gross-sounding stuff, too. There was one stand that sold fried frog legs, which might be okay. But this other stand: Krispy Kreme donut chicken sandwich. and this cookie sandwich thing which consists of a chocolate chip cookie, cream cheese, strawberry syrup, and chicken. omgwtfbbq fo'reals?! I just had chicken parmasan. Went on two rides, this mouse roller coaster and the ferris wheel. It was fun. Wish I could've gone on more rides, though, but ticket$$. =\
I brought my film camera, on black & white right now, and got 25 shots. Yay! That's the most shots I've taken in one place so far. haha.
The Del Mar fireworks weren't really impressive. And where we were sitting, a building/tower & a palm tree blocked some of the fireworks. Then the pause leading up to the finale was a little too long and gave off momentary confusion as to if that was just the end of the show.
New York fireworks shows are always better.
But there were fireworks last week at EDC, going along with great music, so whatever. haha.
I still haven't written my review of EDC yet, maybe in a couple more days.
Started classes on Monday. Also finished Rosetta Stone Swedish and started on Italian. Then I also downloaded Ableton and am trying to make a mix. So yeah, kinda busy, but thought that of course I need to make a July 4th post. Yeah. Laters. ~

Electric Daisy Carnival
is today! and Saturday!
WHY did they put Aly & Fila at 4-6pm? That's sort of a weird yet nice time, when the sun is starting to set but the energy levels are..unsure/in transition. And they play really euphoric trance, from the start til the end of their sets, no tech trance crap. I wonder how that'll go, and hope I get there in time and not miss their set.
So for Friday, my plans are:
ALY & FILA, ATB, and Evol Intent and the rest of the "Monsters of Jungle".
I hope they don't play jungle, though; I hate jungle. That better just be their name, they better play some cool jump-up drum'n'bass. I'll check out Fedde le Grand and Eddie Halliwell, too, haven't heard any of their stuff before. And maybe Shinichi Osawa and Subflo as well.
My Saturday plans:
Kyau & Albert, Cosmic Gate, Yoji/Kaskade, Sander van Doorn, Benny Benassi/The Crystal Method, MARKUS SCHULZ, and INFECTED MUSHROOM!
If they didn't have simultaneous set times, I would go see Subfocus and Andy C, too, since now I'm more into drum'n'bass than I was before.

I'm not much into fashion, really. But I've not been doing much these past few days, (because there's simply not much to do here at this time. I need another book to read, don't feel like watching TV series, and don't have a car) and have been passing the time shopping online.
Realised that I quite like dark shirts and the sort of sophisticated/casual style. Haha. and thought I that I should look into nice black shoes to wear with my APCs, since I don't have any type of those shoes: flats, booties, heels, whatever non-sneakers.
I would so buy these two pairs..if I had the money. arrghh money. x___x;;; Spent a lot this month already on furniture and last month on other stuff. Blah.
But too expensive for me, and final sale (30%off) so if they don't fit I won't be able to return it and I'm too lazy to sell stuff online. I usually hate/would not give a thought to buying shoes that are so low (at least in the front)/close to the ground. I want at least half an inch platform in the front part, too. But I really like how these two pairs look. Anyone know of places which sell similar shoes but at a more affordable price?

University Entrance Exams
Be glad we only have the easy-peasy SATs and ACTs here in America and not the super-hard college entrance exams that kids in China and Japan have to take. Exam cram school, studying 14-16 hours a day for a whole year. Way too extreme.

For example, "hands off my health care" is an absurd slogan that feeds off anti-government sentiment and does not take into account the fact that Medicare is a government program and that the insurance industry has deprived Americans of basic health care rights — i.e., either these people have little health care now, so that there is nothing for the government to take its hands off of; or, to the extent that they do have health care, that care is provided via Medicaid and Medicare, which are government programs. Moreover, if the government really took "hands off" the life of its citizens, these ninnies would not have public schools, police departments, fire departments, roads, Medicare, Social Security, unemployment insurance, a minimum wage, worker's compensation, the armed forces, public sanitation, or the swine flu vaccine (which is being developed and will be distributed by public health facilities). And so on.
I deplore and resent the stupidity that has been tapped by the health care industry to deprive me and my family of the benefits of what is, basically, a very good bill. (And yes, I've read it — and it's not really 1013 pages, because it is set in 14-point type and double-spaced — plus like most bills, much of the provisions are procedural, not substantive.) "Resent," because my professional options have been sharply limited by the fact that my insurance is not portable; I cannot do the public sector work that I would like to do, and for which I am abundantly qualified, because I would have to give up the coverage that my family needs and which is provided by my private sector employer.
The reasons that the health care bill, with the public option, may be defeated are not related to anything that is actually in the bill. those reasons are the unscrupulous, deplorable, immoral greed of the health care industry; the greed and moronic ideology of the members of Congress that take Big Health's money; and the unbelievable ignorance and malleability of an American public that could not reason its way out of a paper bag, let alone make careful decisions about a complicated issue. Re the latter, our educational system is at fault; and not only do other nations have better health care than we do, but those nations also have a more intelligent, educated populace. We will pay for our deficiencies in a 21st Century world.
