messages from God

Beck is wise indeed! Do you know what else is a message from God? Your fingers. Your lover. This column. That Toyota. This bag of frozen peas. Yemen. Cells. Lava. Videoconferencing. Pencils. Yappy little dogs. Quantum mechanics. Dark matter. Lip balm. Finland.
FINLAND. (& lip balm)

mark morford is the man.
Glenn Beck is a message from God. 23.03.11, sfgate.

oh, the batch of young voters..

Hey, at least this guy voted. Obama won in '08 with 66% of the 18-29 vote. Most of that demo stayed home this time and played Cut the Rope and drank vodka/Red Bulls and tweeted about not caring anymore. Ah, silly youth.

Letter to a whiny young democrat. mark morford, sfgate, 03.11.10.

big oil's chernobyl

A dragonfly tries to clean itself as it is stuck to marsh grass covered in oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in Garden Island Bay on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana near Venice on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.
Natural gas siphoned from the BP oil leak burns off on the Discover Enterprise on May 21, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast. Ultra-deepwater rigs and other equipment are being assembled at the site, preparing for a procedure called a "top kill" that BP hopes will stop the flow of oil from the well.

How do you take it all in? How do you see, feel, understand the impact of what's happening to an enormous portion of our planet, the bleak and oozing death of it all? How do you shrug it off?

Behold our dark, magnificent horror. mark morford, sfgate, 04.06.2010

born of hope

Truth is, we've done the I-predict-a-better-future thing since Adam checked out Eve in her newly sinful state and went, oh hell yes.

more mark morford musings

All politicians are madhouse freaks
19.feb.2010
– the disgust of american politics, bipartisan deadlock, and the acidic, poisonous congress
– the disgust of meat, coca-cola, the american diet, and dangerously high airbag pressure

Mark Morford teaches yoga! Why didn't I know that before?
I'm pretty certain now that older white guys are my type.
Ok, MM is maybe a bit too old—on note of gray hair— but yoga: fit. and his writing: hot.

I've also been wanting to be vegetarian for while, and semi am one.
On account of the environment damage meat production incurs, the inappropriate amount of energy needed to produce it and just the basic unhealthiness of meat, the argument to slash meat out of one's diet is quite reasonable.
But it's mostly because I'm too lazy and don't want to cook that I don't eat meat at home. My college diet consists mostly of trail mix, bread, yogurt, soy milk, spinach and romaine leaves, vegetarian pizza, tortellini, and chocolate. (way to be asian.) When I go eat out, however, I'm more inclined to order something with meat since I don't eat it at home. Turkey sandwich or chicken sausage omelette or a lamb Indian dish. Totally off beef, though. On Wednesday, I had a panang beef sandwich at the thai place on campus. bad choice. did not feel good.

Anyone else semi-/mostly vegetarian?

sunday super bowl

Mark Morford

The Zen of Super Bowl watching: Whichever team has ball, root for them with all your heart & soul. Cheer and stomp and scream. When other team gets ball, switch and do the same for them. Turn off TV with 3 minutes left and game is tied. Go have sex.

delights and epiphanies

I have a question. It might be damn near unanswerable. It might be rhetorical, open-ended, imponderable, a bit obvious. But it also feels terrifically important, essential to a deeper understanding of how time and love and eternity function in this meek and humble terrestrial plane we call reality. Or maybe that's just the sake talking. Shall we find out?
A very nice column by Mark Morford, devoid of political bashing and whatnot.

smoking;; Mark Morford

ESSENTIAL Mark Morford columns:

Give It Up, Smoker 08.April.09
Death, cancer, rotted teeth, emphysema won't do it, but 62 cents will?

and his earlier (2005) column of the same topic:
Dead People Smoke Camels
Quit smoking the EZ way! Pop this new drug, ignore your real issues. God bless America.
It seems obvious but it bears repeating: magic-bullet drugs do nothing. They do nothing to help you change a thing about your addictive tendencies or your attitude or your lifestyle, do nothing to induce any sort of increase in your understanding of how the body works and how the spirit is screaming for attention and just why the hell you might be so easily prone to addiction in the first place. Such prescription drugs don't educate. They don't invoke change. They just numb.

But hell, who cares? Why examine causes? Why try to figure out the reasons behind our toxic tendencies and our weird obsession with things we know are killing us? Simply bomb the problem into submission, and then pretend it's not still right there, simmering just underneath, even nastier and more fanged than before and just aching to manifest itself in some other form. Ain't that America? You're goddamn right it is.

Fuckhell, Mark is still confined to SFgate.com, totally need to get him back in print again! I would cut out his columns and paste them on my walls.

I even agree on the current position of those anti-gay-marriage organization he presented in his most recent column:

Fear the rainbow!
A storm is gathering. Are you afraid, Christian? Are you afraid *enough*?

Mark Morford is such a liberal pagan, and such an obscenely great writer. He has this like unitarian pagan sort of everything is god, we are god, god is a she, buddha, allah, whatever, I dunno worldview. He's crazy. But crazy good. Brings out the truth in his columns, and that's what counts most. Though I don't share and support his worldview, the stuff he writes about are on-point. Read his columns and get addicted.

On another note, Morford's writing is still ++++.
You might disagree. You might say, hey wait a minute, not all American cars are as dreadful and ill-equipped as Sarah Palin at a science fair.
Detroit must die
American cars are still uniformly god-awful. Why save them?

Get on with it, America. Clean Diesel.
Stuff like this makes me want to go to Europe even more.

The 65 mpg Ford the U.S. Can't Have
Ford's Fiesta ECOnetic gets an astonishing 65 mpg, but the carmaker can't afford to sell it in the U.S.

Back to Morford:
oh my God don't you know this here life is a veritable liquid madhouse of unhappiness? A giant smoldering smoothie of misery and angst and vague feelings of inadequacy and spiritual barrenness? It's the American way.
Misery loves TV
Unhappy people watch lots more toob. But it doesn't stop there.

Happy people usually only want a long walk, some sunshine, maybe a margarita and a good book and messy oral sex every hour or two. That's easy. It's unhappy people who really drive the economy. Unhappy people make capitalism go. This is why we like to create so many of them.
As liberal as Mark Morford is, I still love his writing. He speaketh the truth.
