SF Noise Pop 2010

SF Noise Pop started last Wednesday and is almost over. I'm a bit bummed I couldn't go, (presently going to school in SD)—would've be cool to go to indie rock shows every night for a week, and also because I would miss San Diego's Indie Fest as well.

But yeah, if you're in the Bay Area, you have one more night of Noise Pop. Go check it out, post pictures afterward and blog a reivew so I can enjoy it vicariously through you.

Here are a couple reviews by live105 of shows so far.

Oh, nvm, just took a look at the schedule—the closing night show has already sold out.
Next year, guys. Gotta get on those indie events. (and I gotta get on blogging at times when I actually find out about shit. I saved a draft with the noisepop website url last tues. night, and didn't get to making a complete post until tonight. Win.)

My Girls and My Boys

Animal Collective - My Girls, from the album "Merriweather Post Pavilion" (jan2009)

I don't think it's that great of a song. Drones on and gets boring after a bit. I've listened to the MPP album, too, and that just seems to be Animal Collective's sound. Kind of psychedlic, a little shoegazy, sort of dancable, but mostly just drones on and on (especially the vocals). Even if I were in an altered state of mind, I think I would still have a pretty low tolerance for their songs. Being so, I'm in that small group of hipsters who don't get what all the hype about Animal Collective was about.

Nevertheless, check out this acoustic cover by this Swedish band called Taken By Trees. It's slightly more tolerable to me because it's 2 minutes shorter than the original.

Sushi with lots of good stuff: Salmon, Cucumber, Carrot, Takuan (yellow pickled daikon), Green Onion, and some Seaweed. We ran out of seaweed sheets to roll it in so I came up with the insidious idea of using a (yes, your eyes do not deceive you) freaking TORTILLA.
SUSHI BURRITO FTW.

Band of Skulls :: Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

artist: Band of Skulls
from: London, UK
album: baby darling doll face honey
label: artist first
release date: 07.april.2009
genre: rock, alternative rock
rating: quite good, 6/10 on popmatters review
buy: amazon
« link to preview taken down due to DMCA

1. Light Of The Morning
2. Death By Diamonds And Pearls
3. I Know What I Am
4. Fires
5. Honest
6. Patterns
7. Hollywood Bowl
8. Bomb
9. Impossible
10. Blood
11. Dull Gold Heart
12. Cold Fame

You've probably heard the singles "I Know What I Am" and "Death By Diamonds and Pearls". But this album isn't all downright fun, sing-along, rock. Slower rock ballads/sort of indie-ish-maybe songs are juxtaposed between the real rock ones. Another band member (female) takes on the lead vocals on a few of them, which confused me at first until I recalled that part in the popmatters review. Overall an enjoyable album.

Mumford & Sons :: Sigh No More

artist: Mumford & Sons
from: the UK
genre: indie, indie-folk
album: Sigh No More
release date: 16.feb.2010
label: Glassnote
rating: pretty good
buy: amazon

1. Sigh No More
2. The Cave
3. Winter Winds
4. Roll Away Your Stone
5. White Blank Page
6. I Gave You All
7. Little Lion Man
8. Timshel
9. Thistle & Weeds
10. Awake My Soul
11. Dust Bowl Dance
12. After The Storm

Ok, upon first listen, I thought this was quite good, until I read the pitchfork review a couple minutes ago. Not that I completely allow critics to form my opinions. But I probably should listen to albums more than once before posting it here. Oh hey, 8/10 rating on popmatters review. And yeah, what he said: you would think that this is another americana/indie-folk band, but they're from west London. Also, some Christian themes in the lyrics. Which could be tiring after a bit, actually.

Sexy Boy

Franz Ferdinand's cover of Air's "Sexy Boy".

The original, if you've never heard it before (in which case :( sadface for you):

Was denkst du?
I don't think it's bad, I agree with this guy aranwood's comment:
"It's a good interpretation of a great song. It opens up a way for pub-level covers bands to perform the tune."

more mark morford musings

All politicians are madhouse freaks
19.feb.2010
– the disgust of american politics, bipartisan deadlock, and the acidic, poisonous congress
– the disgust of meat, coca-cola, the american diet, and dangerously high airbag pressure

Mark Morford teaches yoga! Why didn't I know that before?
I'm pretty certain now that older white guys are my type.
Ok, MM is maybe a bit too old—on note of gray hair— but yoga: fit. and his writing: hot.

I've also been wanting to be vegetarian for while, and semi am one.
On account of the environment damage meat production incurs, the inappropriate amount of energy needed to produce it and just the basic unhealthiness of meat, the argument to slash meat out of one's diet is quite reasonable.
But it's mostly because I'm too lazy and don't want to cook that I don't eat meat at home. My college diet consists mostly of trail mix, bread, yogurt, soy milk, spinach and romaine leaves, vegetarian pizza, tortellini, and chocolate. (way to be asian.) When I go eat out, however, I'm more inclined to order something with meat since I don't eat it at home. Turkey sandwich or chicken sausage omelette or a lamb Indian dish. Totally off beef, though. On Wednesday, I had a panang beef sandwich at the thai place on campus. bad choice. did not feel good.

Anyone else semi-/mostly vegetarian?

sf pillow fight

Photo: Lea Suzuki / The Chronicle

SF Pillow Fight went down yesterday at Justin Herman Plaza.
I'm not sure what to think about mass flash mob events like this. Sure they look really fun, but upon a little further thought, they strike me as kind of post-modernist. Like people gotta do mass random shit to feel like something's happening and to pump up some excitement. (But then that's like everything else, right? drugs, raves, alcohol, sungod, I dunno.) And for catharsis, too. Everyone's too tense from shit so they gotta break out their pillows and congregate downtown and slam each other with soft bags of feathers and memory foam.

San Diego's holding their Pillow Fight on Sunday, April 3rd downtown at the Horton Plaza.
(April 3rd is International Pillow Fight Day. Hurray.
Why SF yesterday? *shrugs*)

A guy I know organized UCSD's TritonMob and their Pillow Fight went down during Prime Time 12:50-1pm Friday on Library Walk. The event slipped my mind and I didn't attend; hopped on the bus to downtown LJ for a relaxing lunch and a walk by the ocean. But from the vids on the fb events page and considering the apathetic nature of a good amount of Tritons, looks like UCSD Pillow Fight #2 had a pretty good turnout.

Goldfrapp :: Felt Mountain

artist: Goldfrapp
from: UK (myspace) (jukebox)
album: Felt Mountain
release date: 19.sept.2000
label: Mute
genre: trip-hop, 40s?, read below..
rating: EXCELLENT. pitchfork review

special edition (+remixes)
192kbps//101mb

holy shizz am i glad i made this musical discovery. i was listening to soundcheck on live105 sunday night, then decided to keep it on and listen to jelli radio (user-controlled radio). "ooh la la" (from 2005 album "supernature") played, and i was like 'wtf! how come i've never heard of goldfrapp?!'
You might expect the debut album from a woman who has collaborated extensively with Tricky and Orbital to be both wondrous and strange—and you'd be right to. What you might not expect is the depth of Alison Goldfrapp's beguiling, distracting 21st-century noir visions on Felt Mountain. She and her fellow composer Will Gregory can mix in Brechtian cabaret; classical instrumentation; left-of-field electronics; decadent, Gainsbourg-style French pop; and the odd piece of whistling on just one track ("Felt Mountain"). "Oompa Radar" almost reaches Tom Waits heights of infamy, the way familiar instruments come together in such a simultaneously comforting and alienating style. The baroque "Paper Bag," meanwhile, uncannily recalls Joe Meek's toy-town visions of 1960s grandeur. All this and a seductive vocal to die for.
–Everett True

haunting, unearthly, and wondrous, ethereal and moody, incredible, dark, enchanting, extremely fresh sounding, yet, at the same time, quite nostalgic

(amazon reviews)
Immediately upon listening to the first track off this album, I was reminded of Portishead. But this whole album is way more interesting than Portishead, imo. Portishead is more dreary. This is more..wondrous. You gotta listen to it. Felt Mountain feels like music from the 40s, (if i'm wrong, fuck me i don't know time periods), like from a noir soundtrack. Imagine the black and white films, a dark nightclub, gentlemen in suits smoking cigars, and a band playing, with a very sensual singer. Amazing.

Various Artists
Chillout Sessions XII
release date: 30.aug.2009
genres: electro, indie-electro/nu-disco, synthpop, electro-pop, pop, alternative, indie, indie-pop, anything BUT chillout.
rating: sehr sehr gut. recommended.

You've probably heard a good number of songs here, which are quite good, which makes this a very good compilation. I don't know why MOS names this "Chillout Sessions", though. I found it when browsing a chillout forum looking for actual chillout albums. I'm conjecturing "chillout" because it is relatively chill compared to what MOS is known for–trance, house, banging dancefloor anthems. Ehh, well, just making sure you don't get tricked like I did into thinking I was getting an album with tight chillout remixes of Ladyhawke and Empire of the Sun. But yeah, as I said, a very good compilation album, highly recommended.
