punny

The true punster’s mind cycles through homophones in search of a quip the way small children delight in rhymes or experiment babblingly with language. Accordingly, the least intolerable puns are those that avoid the pun’s essential puerility. Richard Whately, Archbishop of Dublin, was a specialist. He could effortlessly execute the double pun: Noah’s Ark was made of gopher-wood, he would say, but Joan of Arc was maid of Orleans. Some Whately-isms are so complex that they nearly amount to honest jokes: Why can a man never starve in the Great Desert? Because he can eat the sand which is there. But what brought the sandwiches there? Why, Noah sent Ham, and his descendants mustered and bred.

Pun for the Ages, NYtimes

Yes, I really do love puns, though I am not in any rankings of punners. I just enjoy them. I'm bad at making jokes, too.
Gosh, there were really cool guys in my class at Berkeley High. So punny. Spurred by none other than Matthew Wright, of course. In AP Bio, there would be unofficial pun contests. Goshdammit I can't even remember any of those puns right now. Gyahhs. And I haven't heard any good puns lately, or any puns at all. That one in the article is so pwnage, though.

Tara's Organic Ice Cream;; my last name

Tara's Organic Ice Cream
College Ave. Berkeley, CA
Cross street Alcatraz, across from Noah's Bagels, a block from Claremont, Safeway/76.

Get the medium size, $4.60, because then you can get 3 flavours. Yes, I know, $4.60 you can get a pint of very nice ice cream at Whole Foods.
My second time at Tara's: blueberry mint, strawberry balsamic, saffron
blueberry mint: I like blueberry, I like mint. Good.
strawberry balsamic: It's basically strawberry. A tiny hint of balsamic? I couldn't really tell.
saffron: I'm really liking it, actually. A very interesting flavour. Definitely try it.

I honestly didn't know what saffron is. Only other time I've heard it is Saffron City in Pokemon, (that purple psychic lady, if I recall correctly). Saffron is a spice made from some type of flower.
My first visit to Tara's I got saffron and something else.
Tara herself will probably be working the counter. She was there both times when I went. But today she seemed a bit pissed, because before me were three kids having trouble deciding on flavours and how to pay. But whatever, kids will be kids, that is, annoying.

EFF my last name.
It's definitely not at all close to horrible, but it's just annoying.
I don't like my school e-mail address,
I signed up for Southwest's Rapid Rewards using my legal last name, then I wanted to add my previous flights to the account, but only on one trip did I use my legal last name. Rawrrr.
Sometime when I go up to registration counters, the person working can't find me in the system because I told them the wrong last name. Then when I tell them my legal last name, or the other one which I said first, they look at me weird like I don't even know my own name. Grr.

My mom showed and told me to fill out the form to change my last name. What a crap (though not too large) packet of forms. It's a bit confusing, too. Ughh. Kind of intimidated by it and so it's just on my desk, over which I've put various things such as metal cds and lip balm.

My lawyer said that the process is a pain in the ass, such a hassle. =(
But maybe he'll feel particularly empathetic and help me with it?
The name-changing process also requires a court hearing. WTF blahh.
I'll probably owe him big time and really need to get hit by a car if he does help me change my last name. I just planned to have my last name changed before I get my license, or else after I get my license and change my last name, then I'll have to send out forms and shit to redo my license. I would already have to do that for my passport since I got my passport renewed last year.

K maybe music posts when I have more time to kill online when school starts again next Monday. 'Til then, ciao.

recession-proof industry?

No, the porn industry is not.

silverwing3/22/2009 11:06:22 AM
Since there is far less demand in society for men to have the opportunity to make such money dancing naked, there should be a government program created to provide men with grants who want to dance naked for women but can't get high-paying jobs doing it. It is only fair since we all want equality.
Fuck yeah. ROFLOLWTFEEZYlovely

On spring break! Got home Thursday evening.
Took meine Mutter out to Abendessen at MSF!
Then more food with grandparents the next day.
Yesterday I spent 3 hours in the darkroom. Still want to make more prints though, from film I took during Thanksgiving and winter break.
No time to really blog,
leisure reading: Haruki Murakami:: Blind Willow, Sleeping Women
news articles from last week I've saved in like 13 tabs in Firefox that I still haven't gotten to,
MILK mags I haven't opened yet.
getting more into indie-electro, just downloaded 40 tracks.
Will blog more when I get back to school, haha.

Stay cool.

the central limit theorem

I like it when teachers/professors try to be humorous, making an otherwise boring powerpoint/keynote lecture somewhat less boring.
and regression:

I am studying/studied so much, I better get an A in Poli30, or at least a B.
And pleeeease please pass Microecon. Midterm 1: D+, Midterm 2: C-, Final (50% of grade, I think) I hope to do better at least a C-. Passing grade is C- or better, correct?

BTW, Happy Saint Patrick's Day. This is such a completely forgettable holiday. I really would have been a caught-off guard with the green people had not a friend mentioned a week earlier to me that St. Paddy's Day would be near my date of departure.

10h myöhässä

Indica:: 10 h myöhässä (10 hours late):: [album:Valoissa, 2008]

Minä olen kai noin 10 tuntia myöhässä
Ymmärräthän, joskus hetket vievät repivät käsistä
Olen joskus vuosia istunut vain neljän seinän sisällä
Yrittänyt saada jostain kiinni ja olla perillä

I guess I'm always about 10 hours late
You know, sometimes the moments grab you away by the hands
Sometimes I have just sat years inside four walls
Tried to get a hold on something and to reach my destination

En löytänyt kotiin asti kuljin kyllä varovasti
Tieltä eksyivät horjuvat askeleeni
En löytänyt kotiin asti
Vaikka mietin vakavasti
Jonnekin vain hukkasin osoitteen

I couldn't find my way home, I tried to walk carefully
My wobbling steps lost the way
I couldn't find my way home,
even though I did think hard
I just lost the address somewhere

Kuka jaksaa aina tehdä kaiken niin, ettei kaduta
Minun täytyy olla vapaa eikä miettiä turhia
Sillä olen istunut vuosia vain neljän seinän sisällä
Yrittänyt jotain oppia ja olla kunnolla

Who is able to do everything without any regrets?
I have to be free and not worry unnecessary
Because I have sat years inside four walls
Trying to learn something and behave

I can almost sing along to the whole song without looking at the lyrics. Ahah one of my favourite Indica songs.

LED art

In tones alternately poetic or oracular, inflamed or numb, Big-Brotherly or whispered, Jenny Holzer has warned of evolving threats to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, by using pop-culture modes of public address such as billboards and giant projections.

I have my hotmail set to Deutsch, so when I logout I see the msn.de page, and sometimes I watch a video or two.
The first is a reggae tune, titled "until the sun comes out". It's okay. Just kinda cool to hear German rap. The second is your mainstream simple hip-hop, "Move your ass". Hahaha watch it and then imagine it in English, a group of hip-hop white guys yelling at you to move your ass. lols

Separation in Tokyo

Tokyo is perhaps the most haphazardly arranged of the world's capitals, a place where flophouses nestle beside fashion boutiques, temples butt up against massage parlors and wildly disparate tribes live side by side yet often intersect only by chance.

These unlikely juxtapositions have turned the city into an ideal breeding ground for pop culture, but they also contribute to a social infrastructure that can seem exceedingly vulnerable. Friends who live there admit to a looming sense that Tokyo's cultural ecosystem is just one strong tremor away from collapse. They also fear that the global economic meltdown may be what ultimately turns its whimsical dysfunction into full-blown disaster. (continue reading)
"Living on Tokyo Time", article by Jeff Yang, SFchron, Asian Pop
about the social disconnect in urban Japan.
Plus the good films (mentioned at the end of his column) I will be missing out on at the upcoming SFIAAFF.

I just finished and turned in a final project yesterday. Now I'm just catching up reading some news. More music to come, definitely. I have 6 posts in drafts. Some homework to finish up and finals next week that I should have started studying for by now, though.

Oh, and I had a bad dream this morning that I found out I had a final on Friday. zomg that would suck. And then another dream, I got a pair of COH jeans, they fit pretty good, but there was a back pocket design that even said "Citizens of Humanity" in cursive. On the back pockets. Ew.
I went to bed at 23uhr last night. 11pm. Like zomg f'real? That CAT final project totally screwed up my sleeping habits. At least for a night.

27th SFIAAFF

Ehh I haven't been keeping with asian stuff at all. During the summer I'll watch more movies, including Asian ones. Not going to spend much time browsing the site, since I'm not even in the Bay Area now.

Wait actually I'll be in town for the last 3 days of the festival. Erik, wanna go catch The Chaser at the PFA on Friday (2oth) night?
"Maybe the festival should instead have opened with "The Chaser," a thriller that was a sleeper hit in South Korea and is slated for a Hollywood remake by Warner Bros. It'll show three times at the festival, so create your own opening night."—SFchron

gay marriage

I'm really sick of this Prop.8 shit. Seriously, P8 is just all bad, for both sides.
And the gay rainbow is getting annoying. The rainbow is a symbol that God will never again flood the world like he did in Noah's time. I just hate it when words, symbols are changed over time to mean something so completely different.

Gay people, we get it. You're gay, you wanna be with your partner for the rest of your life. Okay. Stop making such a big deal like being gay makes you so special. Stop fucking with God and everyone else. Marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman. The term "gay marriage" is a contradiction. Trying to change the whole definition of marriage. Just make up a new word, get "married", be happy, shut up.

Then the other side, the "Christians" or Christians. Good job for standing up for what you believe in. But the "Christians", in quotes because they don't act christianly at all towards homosexuals screw it up for the Christians and gays. Jesus embraced everyone, sat with the tax collectors and "sinners". If he were on earth today, he'd be chillin' with the homos and the wall street execs and whoever fucked up our global economy. Just show some love and care for your homosexual neighbors instead of "God hates fags". I think both sides need to better understand each other. And they need to write up a new bill/prop/legislature/whatever the word is.

I'm not homophobic at all, except I just kinda think there were/are too many lesbians in my high school. Or maybe they're all bi, who knows. Whatever. I'm from Berkeley, know a lot more gay people that peers here would. Had a couple homosexual teachers, too. No problems.

It's been said a million times and is what I think is the solution as well: civil unions.
A Reconciliation on Gay Marriage

"Starr also argued that Prop. 8 was a modest measure that left the rights of same-sex couples undisturbed under California's domestic-partner laws and other statutes banning discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The initiative "does not erode any of the bundle of rights that this state has very generously provided," he said, but merely "restores the traditional definition of marriage."

Several justices seemed to agree. Kennard said the voters arguably "took away the label of marriage, but ... left intact most of what this court declared," including unprecedented constitutional protections for gays and lesbians." –read full article

A ruling is due within 90 days of the hearing, we'll see how this overturning Prop8 thing goes.

Telekinesis, Ra Ra Riot

The show at the Loft Sunday night was pretty good.

Telekinesis (Seattle, WA) opened. They were alright, nice guys. At the back merch table I told the lead singer guy, Michael Benjamin Lerner, (2nd from the left) that I hadn't heard of them before, but that I enjoyed their show. I might have bought their CD if I had more cash on me, because the packaging was nice. =) haha great reason. But this lead singer guy didn't play the guitar, he was the drummer. So the drumset was set at the front of the stage, and he apoligized for causing us permanent hearing damage.

The next band was Cut Off Your Hands (New Zealand). I did not like them. Just not my taste in music. Indie-pop/punk, kind of punk-rock-ish with fast drums, their hair styles, and too much 'oh oh oh..' in vocals. They did put on a good show, though, I stepped out right before their second to last song because I couldn't take any more. Other people were quite enjoying them, nevertheless.

Ra Ra Riot was good. But the first few songs, I wasn't feeling it yet. Sounded a bit of a mess live, I thought they sounded better recorded. Drums were loud, everything was just kinda too loud. But later when they got to their better songs, they sounded better. Uh huh, yeah.. Will be seeing them again when they open for Death Cab for Cutie at Rimac. I guess I just wasn't very impressed. Maybe it's just me because I wasn't in too good a mood that day or having to had endure Cut Off Your Hands.

Popmatters Review. Eff I can't write for shit (that's why I don't review and just link you to them). Same as my feelings towards photography, I love and hate reading good music reviews.

I haven't listened to Moon Safari (amazon). That'll be my next CD purchase. 10th anniversay reissue. Hmm..I want Pocket Symphony, as well.

Gawsh I am so getting back into indie. At least for this weekend. I should be starting on my final project now and studying for finals and such. Meaning I'll be listening to drum'n'bass and psy trance again. Haha. Totally fluctuating between indie rock and edm.

Scheiße! I just remembered! A couple years ago Air played at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland with a live orchestra. And I didn't know about it til a couple days after! Gyahhs! FAIL.
